Corregidor trip: A Stronghold of Philippine History

CORREGIDOR ISLAND, Philippines - And so, I've finally set foot in one of the very best places where Philippine history is once molded - a place where lots of historical events and heroes emerged. These are just some of the things when I personally landed into the place where General Douglas McArthur once reigned as a hero for the Philippines in spite of the deadly battles and colonized by his fellow Americans, and held battle together with the Filipinos against the Japanese invasion.

Corregidor Island between Bataan and Cavite

An actual map of the Island in the Museum

Yes. This is Corregidor Island.

Corregidor island, or what the locals call "the rock", is a tadpole like shaped island strategically placed in between Bataan and Cavite, and is the only water-way before going straight to the capital of Manila, Philippines. The island itself is a war fortress and is a living legend in terms World War II remains against the Japanese invasion. The island itself is the stronghold of armory, valor and honor against enemies.

And so I spent a Corregidor Island all-day tour worth P2,300 (with surcharge fee) c/o Sun Cruises Inc. that packs with buffet lunch and a bus ride touring the best places of the historical background.

The tour kicks off with a very comfortable cruise along Manila bay c/o Bay Cruises ship/ferry. It took us at least 1 hour and 15 minutes before we finally set foot on the island itself. We disembarked the ship and proceeded immediately at the buses waiting at the dock area. We rode Bus # 3.

We were accompanied by the oldest tour guide of all the buses in that day that goes by the name 'Paul'. In spite of his old looks, he, is for which I personally bet the best tour guide in the island. He has great knowledge of history. And yes, he told us that he is in fact a historian. I personally believed that most great tour guides are old people with a lot of PERSONAL experience rather than being read on books or by means of the internet. And yet, our guide made the best of it.

I'm going to let the pictures tell the story of our adventure. I thought it might be nice to let people experience it personally rather than telling the whole adventure here. Feel free to take a look at the series of pictures below. Let's help Corregidor islands preservation.

Malinta Tunnel - Lights and Sounds show

Malinta tunnel is the last place to visit as a tourist during the day tour. You will be then invited to purchase a ticket for the Malinta tunnel lights and sounds show worth P300. The show itself depicts the history of Corregidor island through entertaining lights and sounds.

Now, the island itself is a venue for peace and prosperity, preserving it's historical left-overs of the war to be presented and visited by the public. I personally find it a very good place for teaching history to those of the young Filipinos who don't know or remember what is the part of the island in terms of the country's history.
